There are many types of service dogs, but since our blog is about people with visual impairment, we are going to focus on seeing-eye dogs.  Dogs may have been used for many years to help people with visual impairments, but the first formal training  program for seeing-eye dogs began in Germany during World War I.  During this war, many veterans lost their sight, so the need for assistance was great.

Seeing-eye dogs, or Guide Dogs, assist people with visual impairment, using cues from the person.  They don’t control the visually impaired person, they follow his or her commands.  They are trained to avoid obstacles and help the person travel safely.  Of course, dogs are wonderful companions as well.  In addition to safe travel, they can provide comfort also.

Over this month, we will continue to discuss the history and importance of guide dogs.  We hope you enjoy learning about them.
